TMJ Arthrocentesis Beverly Hills Oral surgery California

Arthrocentesis, lysis and lavage is a procedure performed on the temporomandibular joint and is least invasive in nature. It is done in the office itself after sedating the patient intravenously. It reduces pain in the joint and enhances the range of motion. During this procedure sterile fluid is injected into two ports of TMJ. This removes any stagnant fluid and also widens the joint. This process causes a reversal in the negative pressure developed within the joint which can also impede the mobility of the joint disk. It also has an inhibitory effect on the chemicals responsible for pain and swelling. Towards the end of the procedure, medications that decrease inflammation and increase lubrication are inserted within the TMJ.
